PROJECT INFO:

The project development objective is to strengthen access to advanced pharmaceutical

technologies and improve the pharmaceutical regulatory framework for industry in Africa.

The project is structured around three key components:

1. Operationalization of the African Pharmaceutical Technology Foundation This component shall accelerate the operationalization of the APTF and equip it with the requisite capacity to mobilize resources for its programs. It will provide support in the following areas: - Acquisition of office equipment such as furniture, IT hardware and software; - Recruitment of specialized, industry relevant, technical experts and firms to provide a range of specialized services in the pharmaceutical and health sector; - Recruitment of technical experts to support the establishment of advanced financial, procurement, human resources, and related administrative systems; - Technical studies, trainings, and organization of meetings and workshops; - Operational expenses, including office rental, utilities, and vehicles’ operating costs. The component also includes the implementation of three key programs: i) African Pharmaceutical Technology Marketplace program; (ii) the Good Manufacturing Practice Africa program; and (iii) the implementation of the WTO’s Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights’ program.
   

2. Regional pharmaceutical systems upgrade In line with the EAC Regional Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plan (2017-2027), this component will support several Rwanda-based regional pharmaceutical initiatives and institutions. Specific activities shall include: - Establishing a mutual recognition system - Rwanda FDA laboratory capacity strengthened - Support the roll out of the EAC Pooled Procurement Mechanism (EAC PPM) - Strengthen the capacity of the EAC Regional Centre of Excellence for Vaccines, Immunization, and Health Supply Chain Management - Establish a regional traceability system
